Tampere, FINLAND – A two-goal performance by Kiara Zanon, strong team defence and a shutout by Amanda Thiele lifted Team USA to a 5-0 victory over Sweden in semifinal action at the 2024 Euro Women’s Hockey Tour.

The United States dominated in all facets of the game but it was special teams that proved to be the difference, with the Americans scoring four powerplay goals and killing off three penalties. The main challenge for the winners came midway through the third when Team USA found itself down two players but successfully killed off the 5-on-3 Sweden powerplay.

And, though Thiele faced just two shots in the first and 16 in total, she was forced to make a number of tough saves, perhaps her best coming in the first when a turnover led to a Sweden partial breakaway.

“Our special teams was firing on all cylinders this game and our goaltending was fantastic,” said John Wroblewski, head coach of the 2024 U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team. “We put all phases of the game together today and got a team win.”

Zanon opened the scoring in the first on a USA powerplay and the Americans opened the floodgates in the second with an even-strength goal by Ella Huber and powerplay markers by Abbey Murphy, Zanon and Kirsten Simms.

Ida Boman played the first two periods in the Swedish net, with Ebba Svensson Träff coming on in relief to start the third.

Canada 3, Finland 0

A few hours after the Americans booked a spot in the final, the Canadians took care of business against Finland. Alex Law scored in the first, Sarah Paul scored in the second and Jocelyn Amos sealed the deal with an empty-netter in the third. Eve Gascon made 19 saves for the shutout.

The result leads us to another chapter in the famous Canada-USA women’s hockey rivalry. Although this isn’t the Olympics or a World Championship, you know both teams will be fired up to compete on Sunday.

Finland and Sweden will meet for bronze on Sunday.

Czechia 2, Switzerland 0

In the first of two games that will determine fifth place, Kristyna Kaltounkova scored in the first and Tereza Pistekova added insurance in the third for the Czechs.

The teams will meet again on Sunday.
