France and Austria will join the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

The IIHF Council has approved changes to the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship program. Further Council decisions will be made in the course of the Council meeting over the coming days.

2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship

The IIHF Council determined that France and Austria, the next-ranked countries in the 2021 IIHF Men’s World Ranking, will take part in the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. France will replace ROC in Group A in Helsinki and Austria will replace Belarus in Group B in Tampere.

Aside from the replacement of these teams, the game schedule remains the same and the last-ranked team of Group A and the last-ranked team of Group B will be relegated.

More information concerning tickets will be published soon.

The tournament will take place in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland from 13 to 29 May 2022.

Adjustments in Division I

With France and Austria moving up, the setup of the Division I tournaments with the ten remaining teams will be adjusted to include five teams in each group with Lithuania moving up.

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A in Ljubljana, Slovenia includes now Korea, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania and Lithuania as participants. The two first-ranked teams will be promoted and the last-ranked team will be relegated.

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group B in Poland includes Poland, Japan, Estonia, Ukraine and Serbia. The first ranked team will be promoted to Division IA and the last ranked team will be relegated.

2022 IIHF World Junior Championship

Latvia will compete as the tenth team in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, which is planned in August in Canada with more information on the location and dates to follow.

There will be no relegated team and the setup of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship will be discussed at a later stage.

2022 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in Germany will be held with eight teams. The groups have been reseeded and a new game schedule will be established.

Group A: Canada (1), USA (4), Czechia (5), Germany (8)
Group B: Sweden (2), Finland (3), Switzerland (6), Latvia (7)

With currently two open spots in the top division, two teams can be promoted for 2023 and no team will be relegated.

2022 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship

With the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship in Denmark, Council approved that Sweden as best-ranked other team based on the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Ranking will be invited as the tenth team and be seeded in Group B. At the top tournament, one team will be relegated and one team promoted from WWIA. With Sweden moving up, this year’s Division I Group A will be played with five teams.

2022 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship

Slovakia will compete as the eighth team in the tournament. This year’s Division I Group A will thus be played with five teams. The relegation/promotion format will stay the same with one team relegated and one team promoted.

With respect to the Russian and Belarusian national teams, at the point when it is safe for the teams to return to the IIHF competitions, Council will decide how the teams will be reincorporated into the IIHF Championship Program.
