The 2022 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament ended with a historic disappointment for the Czech team. It missed the quarter-finals and finished the tournament in 9th place. Never before has any Czech or Czechoslovak team finished as low in Olympic or World Championship play since the first tournament in 1920.
The executive committee of the Czech Ice Hockey Association took the consequences and decided to change the coaching staff. Head Coach Filip Pesan, assistant coaches Martin Straka and Jaroslav Spacek, and goaltending coach Zdenek Orct were dismissed from their positions in the men’s national team.
General Manager Petr Nedved was given the task to propose a new coaching team by mid-March.
Pesan took over the team from Milos Riha. At the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship the team finished in seventh place.
