Watch Day 4 of the 2021 IIHF Semi-Annual Congress in St. Petersburg, Russia with the IIHF Council elections.
In the first rounds of voting, the President, the Senior Vice-President and the three Regional Vice-Presidents (Americas, Asia/Oceania, Europe/Africa) will be elected in rounds of voting for the single positions.
For each of these five positions a majority of votes (over 50%) is needed. If nobody reaches a majority of votes, a next round of voting will be held for the position with the candidate with the fewest votes dropping out. This process will continue until a candidate reaches a simply majority.
After the election of the President and Vice-Presidents the election for the remaining nine Council positions will be held. The 14-person Council must consist of at least two female and two male members. The minimum number of two female candidates will be elected first followed by the election of the remaining candidates.
The delegates will vote on as many positions as there are available. A Council candidate normally needs a simple majority to be elected. If more candidates achieve the required majority vote than there are available positions, the available positions shall be filled by the candidates in their order of ranking in that voting round until all available positions have been filled. If not enough candidates reach a simple majority of votes to fill all positions, another round of voting will be held with the remaining candidates and the candidate with the fewest number of votes dropping out. If in any round no candidate receives a simple majority, the candidate with the highest number of votes will be declared elected and if necessary another round of voting will occur. Runoffs can be held in case of ties with more candidates than positions available, or ties for the lowest positions if their removal would cause a situation with fewer candidates available than positions. More details can be found in the IIHF Statutes & Bylaws (Statute 15.3).
After the election of the IIHF Council, the two Internal Auditors will be elected.
