Former Romanian national team player and Olympian Mihail Lucian Popescu passed away on 31 January in Bucharest. He was 60.
Popescu spent his career with Steaua Bucharest where he played his first games in the top Romanian league as a 16-year-old and ended up winning several national championships with the capital team.
Two years later the defenceman got his first call to the national team and played at three IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship B-Pool tournaments (1979, 1981, 1983) as well as the 1980 Olympic Winter Games – the last time Romania played in Olympic ice hockey.
Later Popescu, who was known by his nickname Goe, also represented Romania in lower divisions of the World Championship in 1989 and 1990 and as U18 national team coach.
