The game between Switzerland and Czechia turned into a battle of the goalies. Switzerland's Amaya Iseli made 36 saves in regulation play, her colleague Daniela Novakova 23 for Czechia.
Sonja Inkamp scored for Switzerland, Viktorie Jelkova for Czechia in regulation time, but the big Czech hero was Julie Jebouskova who scored the overtime winner. She roofed a gorgeous snapshot at 1.33 into the extra frame, assisted by Adela Pankova.
"It was a good game, maybe we were a little bit nervous at first but we didn't stop playing even when they scored first," Novakova said.
"In the end, they scored the goals and we didn't … but a point's a point, so we'll take it and move forward," a disappointed Iseli said.
Last year, Switzerland hosted the tournament in Zug, but home ice didn’t help the team as they only managed to get one point, in an overtime loss against Slovakia, before bowing out in the quarterfinal, after a 6-0 loss to Canada. The team only scored three goals in the tournament. Scoring goals was hard today as well, but with eleven returning players, Switzerland had come to Finland to play.
"Last year the team was good, but this year's team is even better," Inkamp said. "We have a lot of 2007s on the team who've played in this tournament before so we have experience but we also have newcomers who are doing a great job here."
Last year’s silver-medal team Czechia had control of the game, especially in the first period, but the Swiss proved to be dangerous if given the chances and Novakova in the Czech goal had to make several key saves, including half a dozen breakaways. Her colleague at the other end of the rink, Amaya Iseli, was just as solid as she turned away 17 Czechia shots before the game was halfway through.
"We knew we'd get our opportunities, and how to take advantage of Czechia's system," Switzerland coach Melanie Haefliger said.
Switzerland got a golden opportunity to take the lead when they played thirty seconds with a two-player advantage, but they couldn’t solve Novakova, and the game stayed scoreless after forty minutes of play.
Five minutes into the third period, Switzerland got another powerplay opportunity. Czechia managed to kill the penalty, but just as the announcer said both teams were playing at full strength, Sonja Inkamp fired a wrist shot from the point and beat Novakova for the first time in the game, giving Switzerland a 1-0 lead at 7.11. Laure Meriguet and Naemi Herzig picked up assists on the goal.
"I didn't see the puck at all, and I think it may have been deflected off a teammate of mine," Novakova explained.
A late Swiss penalty gave lit up Czechia's hopes again, and they pulled Novakova to go get a two-player advantage. And it worked.
Jelkova tied the game with 2.08 remaining in the third period, after Veronika Hujova's shot off a perfect feed from Linda Vocetkova, deflected off her into the net to tie the game.
"It was unbelievable when we scored, the whole bench was celebrating," Novakova said. "I don¨t like overtimes, but I don¨t think they even had a shot on goal this time."
In OT, Switzerland had their chances but when Czechia's Jebouskova got hers, she didn't miss, and the game was over.
"Tomorrow's another game," said Iseli, "against Canada."
