In the first game of the day in Group H of the Women's Olympic Qualification, Norway and the Netherlands played for third place. It was a close game which Norway won in overtime, 4-3. Team captain Mathea Fischer scored the winner at 1:11.

“Overall, it was a good game by us. It was a close game, as expected since they’re hard to play against. They have some very good players who get a lot of ice time, and we know these are always tight games,” Fischer said.

The Netherlands’ Jet Milders collected two points assists, Marthe Brunvold Pabsdorf scored one and assisted one for Norway, Emma Bergesen also collected two points. Eline Gabriele made 33 saves in the Netherlands net.

With 5:36 remaining in the first period, Milders played the puck to the blueline, Hilde Huisman fired a shot, and Maree Dijkema got her stick in the way and it to the back of the net to give the Dutch the lead in the game.

The Netherlands took over the game after their goal and with 1:44 remaining in the period, Kayleigh Hamers’s stretch pass sent the Dutch on a 2-on-1 against a lone Norwegian defender. Ester De Jong tried to pass the puck to her teammate, but it hit the Norwegian defender’s skate and bounced in to give the Dutch a 2-0 lead.

Norway outshot the Netherlands 17-5 in the second period but had to work hard or their goal, which they scored on powerplay halfway through the period. Emma Bergesen fired a slapshot from the point, Gabriele made the initial save, but Andrea Dalen got the rebound, and her shot somehow found its way through the Dutch goaltender’s pads, hit the post, and crossed the goal line at 11:06. Marthe Brunvold Pabsdorf picked up an assist as well.

It took Norway only 21:57 to tie the game in the third period. Again, there was a battle in front of the Dutch net, and Marthe Brunvold Pabsdorf got first to the rebound and lifted the puck into the net. Fischer and Bergesen were credited with assists.

But the Norwegians got a rude awakening with 4:04 remaining, when Savine Wielenga’s wrister from the goal line beat Nystrom on the short side. Milders collected her second point of the game.

However, with 51.6 remaining, Fischer found Millie Rose Sirum in the corner. She rounded the Dutch defense and fired a wrister that went through Gabriele’s give-hole and the game was tied.

And then Fischer struck. She willed her way to the front of the net and slammed the puck into the Dutch net to give Norway the win.

"It was disappointing to lose a two-goal lead, but they played a great game and managed to rally back," said the Netherlands forward Julie Zwarthoed.
