After a record-breaking tournament, Canadian defender Chloe Primerano was named MVP at the 2024 IIHF Women’s U18 World Championship. The 17-year-old was sensational on her debut in IIHF play, leading the tournament in scoring with 16 (8+8) points. That’s the highest scoring performance ever by a defender in this competition, and second only to Amanda Kessel’s 19-point haul on the all-time scoring list.
Primerano also takes her place among the top three players in the tournament, as chosen by the directorate. In that trio she’s joined by two of the stars of Czechia’s sizzling run to the gold-medal game. Goalie Aneta Senkova produced some magnificent performances to steer her country through the knock-out rounds, notably stopping 45 shots in the historic semi-final victory over Primerano’s Canada. Czech captain Adela Sapovalivova had 11 (9+2) points to lead her team in scoring. She also finished second in goals to Canada’s Caitlin Kraemer.
In addition, those three were voted onto the All-Star team as voted by the media working at the tournament. Finland’s Tuuli Tallinen joined Primerano on the All-Star defence, while her team-mate Emma Ekoluoma (8 goals, three assists) featured among the forwards. Team USA’s flamboyant Josie St. Martin completed the line-up.
