For the first time in hockey, a championship receives the Sustainable Event certification. This happens after a major joint investment in sustainability from all the organizers behind the World Juniors Championship (WJC).
- “Since the beginning, we have had high ambitions with our sustainability work and aimed for the championship to be more than just an event. The certification proves that our effort is at a high level and really makes a difference”, shares Mikael Haglund, WJC Director.
To obtain the certification, the event must meet a large number of criteria in the areas of organization, social and ecological sustainability.
In the work, the 2024 IIHF WJC has chosen to invest extra resources in reducing the event's climate impact, making the event accessible and inclusive, and contributing to an improved hockey culture.Efforts were made both in the arenas and with the training of volunteers and staff.
- “Our goal has also been to raise the level of sustainability work within major hockey events, both in Sweden and internationally, adds Mikael Haglund. The certification process has helped us structure and ensure the qualityof the work, and now also evaluate and measure. We are very happy to have been certified!”

The certification is issued byGreentime, a company which hires independent auditors to review the overallevent sustainability processes . A large number of criteria must be met to be approved.
- “Ahead of this championship, the Swedish Ice Hockey Association together with the co-organizers have taken a solid step in the right direction. Great efforts have been made, in everything from dialogue with partners to the purchase of materials, and I hope that visitors will also be able to take part in this fine work”, highlightss Simon Strandvik, CEO of Greentime AB.
The certification is still preliminary. The final one is obtained after JVM, when the responsible auditor carries out his checks in Scandinavium and Frölundaborg to confirm that the event lives up to what the organizer promised.
