The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has released the groups and game schedule of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship following approval by all teams and stakeholders.
The largest annual winter sport event will be co-hosted by Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia from 12 to 28 May 2023.
The groups are based on the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Ranking taking into consideration organizational wishes by the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Organizing Committee.
Defending champion Finland will play the United States, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, France, Austria and Hungary in Group A in Tampere and meet Team USA for the opening game on Friday, 12 May at 16:20 local time. Sweden-Germany will be the evening game at Tampere Deck Arena. The other teams will start the tournament the following day with the games France-Austria, Hungary-Denmark and Germany-Finland.
Group B in Riga includes Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Latvia, Norway, Kazakhstan and Slovenia. Host Latvia will play Canada in its opening game on Friday, 12 May at 20:20 local time following the neighbouring clash between Slovakia and Czechia in the afternoon. The next day Switzerland-Slovenia, Norway-Kazakhstan and Slovakia-Latvia will be played at Arena Riga.

The preliminary round will be played throughout 23 May at the two venues. Tampere and Riga will each host two quarter-final games on 25 May with Finland and Latvia playing the late game at their home arena if qualified. The semi-finals on 27 May and the medal games on 28 May will all be held in Tampere.
