Czech players Martin Beranek and Michael Krutil were assessed suspensions by the Disciplinary Panel following separate incidents at the team’s last game in the quarter-finals against Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton.

The incidence of Martin Beranek happened at 19:18 of the first period when he kicked his opponent Jack Quinn. Beranek wanted to play the puck when the game was interrupted by an offside call and was hit after the whistle. Both players skated towards the corner where Quinn makes a slight contact to Beranek, who then answered with a kick with his right skate to the right leg of his opponent slightly in front of him. In the analysis the Panel determined that based on the movement and swinging motion his actions represent a kick to an opponent in violation of IIHF Official Rule 151 (Kicking).

Beranek will be suspended for one game, specifically the first Czech Republic game at the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, or if named to the roster, the first game of the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, in accordance with IIHF Disciplinary Code Article 10.5.

Michael Krutil was sanctioned due to a boarding incidence in the same game at 14:06 of the third period. Krutil skated towards Ryan Suzuki and before his opponent received a pass, Krutil drove his right shoulder into Suzuki’s back, violently forcing him headfirst into the boards. The Panel determined that his action recklessly endangered the safety of his opponent and violated IIHF Official Rule 119 (Boarding).

Because of this incident, and because the player had previously been sanctioned with a one-game suspension for Slew-Footing during the tournament and taking into consideration IIHF Disciplinary Guideline Article 3; Point 4 (incriminating party’s disciplinary history), Krutil will be suspended for two games, specifically, the Czech Republic’s first two games of the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, or if named to the roster, the Czech Republic’s first two games of the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, in accordance with IIHF Disciplinary Code Article 10.5.
