The Russian Ice Hockey Federation announced that three NHL players will join the ROC team at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga following the end of the season with their respective NHL teams.
Goaltender Ilya Samsonov and defenceman Dmitri Orlov will join from the Washington Capitals and forward Vladimir Tarasenko from the St. Louis Blues.
Samsonov played his second NHL season and will for the first time play at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. He has previously played at two World Juniors and one U18 World Championship.
Orlov concluded his 10th NHL season – all with the Washington Capitals with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2018. Orlov has played for the men’s national team in four World Championships winning gold in 2014 and in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Tarasenko finished his 9th NHL season – all with the St. Louis Blues where he won the Stanley Cup in 2019. He played at two World Championships (2011, 2015) winning silver once, at the 2014 Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Upon arrival in Riga, the late-arriving players will have to quarantine for six days and get tested daily before they can play at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
ROC has until now formally registered 24 players (22 skaters, 2 goalies) and can register up to four additional players.
It was also announced that Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin will not be able to join due to injury.
