The original medals are prepared for the best teams of the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will take place in Ostrava and Trinec from 26th December 2019 to 5th January 2020. Each of the handmade medals is prepared from fifteen parts in total. The author of the design is the architect and designer Oldrich Sladek.
“The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place in Ostrava and Trinec, which are cities known mainly for the processing of iron and steel, and the championship’s medal symbolically reflects this fact. Since the medals are handmade in the final phase, each is truly an original,” says Marketa Sterbova, General Secretary of the Organizing Committee 2020 IIHF WM20.
Oldrich Sladek designed the medals for an IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship for the second time - “his” medals were worn by the best teams at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. However, it was not difficult for him to find an inspiration to create medals for the 2020 IIHF WM20. The design is based on the common features of the organizing cities. "The aesthetic of the medals is based on the steel cities, their traditional industrial look and the principle of their construction," says Sladek.
Medals for the event are exceptional in their construction. “They do not have a classic construction, but they combine the architectural principles of steel cities with modern materials. Each of them consists of seven levels: six levels of steel sheet, each laser cut into a different shape. A ribbon of rubber-textile is inserted between these levels. All seven levels are joined together by brass rivets, just as the original factory buildings were riveted,” describes Sladek.
The history of the production of iron and steel has a long tradition dating back to 1839 in the steel company Trinecke zelezarny. “Steel is a material that will last for generations. We are very pleased that steel was used in the production of the medals for the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, which takes place in the arena in Trinec. It is a symbolic connection,” says Jan Czudek, CEO of Trinecke zelezarny..
While the individual teams for the World Junior Championship are only to be set, the medals are already finalized. The most valuable, the gold medals, are galvanically gilded by 24 karat pure gold and their ribbon has a red colour, silver are left in the colours of steel and accompanied by a blue ribbon. The plates on the bronze medal are gilded with red gold with using a white colour ribbon. The medals have a common size, measuring 66 millimetres in diameter and are half a centimetre thick.
The final look of the medals is also unconventional. “The steel layers are alternate by surface treatment, grinding and gloss. That gives the medal a depth, where the shiny parts stand out from matt and vice versa. Somewhere even the colour of the ribbon shines through the sheet,” added Oldrich Sladek.
The main theme on the face of the medal is based on the logo of the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, the stylization of the hockey goalie. The reverse side of the medals features the logo of International Ice Hockey Federation and names of both the host venues.
The IIHF World Junior Championship took place three times in the Czech Republic and returns after twelve years. The City of Ostrava will host the event for the second time, Trinec is waiting for its premiere.
