Is the IIHF World Championship cancelled?

Yes, the IIHF Council confirmed on Saturday, 21 March that the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be cancelled.

Who made this decision?

This decision was made by the IIHF Council, after discussions with various stakeholders. 

Is it possible that the 2020 World Championship in Zurich and Lausanne could be postponed or moved to next year?

At this time, it cannot be determined if it will be possible for the World Championship to be postponed to a later date in 2020, or that Zurich and Lausanne could host the tournament in May 2021.

Minsk, Belarus, and Riga, Latvia have already confirmed as co-hosts for the 2021 IIHF World Championship, as well as Helsinki/Tampere, Finland for 2022, and a postponement decision would have a major impact on their preparations. Therefore, any decision on a reallocation would have to be brought forth and discussed at the next IIHF Annual Congress

Will I get my money back if I purchased tickets?

The ticket return policy is currently being determined by the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Organizing Committee. This process will take time and fans will be contacted directly via email with regular updates once the ticket refund policy has been confirmed.

Fans that have purchased tickets through an independent ticket broker would need to check with their broker for information on a refund. The 2020 IIHF World Championship Organizing Committee’s ticket refund policy will not apply to tickets that were not purchased through official channels.

In the event of a postponement, all tickets purchased remain valid and cannot be returned.

What about my transport costs to Switzerland?

Ice hockey fans that planned to travel to the WM are encouraged to get in touch with their airline or travel agent to determine whether they can recoup travel costs.
