Kevin Fiala is the 2024 IIHF World Championship MVP. The Swiss forward, who scored seven goals in eight games after jetting into Prague shortly after the birth of his daughter, won the vote among media covering this year’s championship.
With 13 (7+6) points, Fiala was second in tournament scoring behind Team USA’s Matt Boldy. Those points were instrumental in helping Switzerland to its third World Championship final, even though they were not enough to clinch a first ever Swiss gold medal.
Fiala is only the second Swiss player to be voted MVP. In 2013, Roman Josi took the individual award after Switzerland’s run to its first ever gold-medal game. In that tournament, Josi also became the Swiss player to win a directorate award: in 2024, he is the first from his country to win a second.
Josi led the tournament in scoring among defenders with 12 (3+9) points. He was a key part of the Swiss power play that generated 12 goals through the competition. That secured his status as Best Defender in 2024, with Fiala claiming Best Forward.
The Directorate’s top trio was rounded out by Czech goalie Lukas Dostal. The 23-year-old started well, shutting out Finland on opening night. He also had an inspired shut-out against the USA in the quarter-final. And he saved his biggest performance until last, blanking Switzerland with 31 saves in a tense gold-medal game to put the Czechs on top of the world for the first time since 2010.
Those three were also voted onto the Media All-Star Team for 2024. Fiala was joined on the forward line by Canada’s Dylan Cozens and Czechia’s Roman Cervenka. Cozens led the tournament in goals (nine) and led team Canada in scoring (11 points). Along the way, he potted a short-handed OT winner against the Czechs in the group stage.
Czech captain Cervenka, the last active international from the gold medal team of 2010, formed an effective partnership with Lukas Sedlak throughout the tournament. Their line was particularly influential in the group stage, getting the host nation off to a strong start in Prague. He finished with 11 (3+8) points to lead the Czech scoring.
