The MVP of the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is Finnish goaltender Jussi Olkinuora. The 31-year-old started eight of Finland’s 10 games, along the way establishing a shutout streak of 206:44. Heading into the final, he had a goals-against average of 0.86, a save percentage of 96.05 and four shutouts.
Olkinuora was also voted to the Media All-Star Team and was named Best Goalkeeper by the Tournament Directorate.
Okinuora’s Finnish teammate Mikko Lehtonen was also named to the Media All-Star Team and was named Best Defender by the Directorate. A key piece of Finland’s potent power play, Lehtonen led all defencemen in the tournament with 10 assists and 12 points.
The other defenceman on the Media All-Star Team is USA captain Seth Jones. Anchoring a defence that was down to for players for the team’s last two games, Jones was a workhorse, averaging 27:01 of ice time per game.
The forwards on the Media All-Star Team consist of Czechia’s Roman Cervenka, Canada’s Pierre-Luc Dubois and Finland’s Sakari Manninen. Cervenka, who led the tournament with 12 assists and 17 points, was also named Best Forward. Dubois was tied for the tournament lead with seven goals and was tied for second in points with 13. With six goals and 10 points, Manninen was a timely scorer for Finland and scored the tournament-winning goal in overtime.
