The IIHF has issued a one-game suspension to Kazakhstan forward Danil Tretiakovski.
The suspension will go into effect during Kazakhstan’s first game of the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship or, if the Player is named to the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, Kazakhstan’ first game of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A.
The suspension stems from a violation of IIHF Official Playing Rule #124 (Checking to the Head and Neck Area).
The incident in question occurred at 14:09 in the 1st period Kazakhstan’s game against Denmark. Denmark forward Jonas Rondbjerg recuperated the puck in the left corner of the Danish defensive zone. Tretiakovski saw Rondbjerg coming out of the corner and skated towards him, preparing to make a body check. After Rondbjerg chipped the puck away, Tretiakovski delivers a hard body check with his right shoulder following through with his elbow to the head of Rondbjerg. Also, while making the body check, both of Tretiakovski’s skates left the ice. Rondbjerg fell to the ice and remained on the ice for a few moments before standing up.
Based on all facts ascertained, the Disciplinary Panel determined that Tretiakovski drove his right shoulder with excessive force into the head and neck area of Rondbjerg and then followed through with his elbow. During this process Tretiakovski also jumped, with his skates leaving the ice, when delivering the body check.
The Panel determined that Tretiakovski’s actions were extremely dangerous, creating a serious risk of injury to Rondbjerg, and violated IIHF Official Rule 124 (Checking to the Head and Neck Area). A correct check without elevation and excessive force could easily been executed on Rondbjerg.
Decision:
The Disciplinary Panel determined that because Tretiakovski violated Official Playing Rule 124 when checking Rondbjerg, he shall be sanctioned as follows:
Suspension for one game; specifically, Kazakhstan’s first game of the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship or, if Tretiakovski is named to the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, Kazakhstan’s first game of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A.
