It‘s official! The mascot for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Bratislava and Kosice will be known as Macejko.
The name of the bear with a shepherd’s hat and belt was chosen by fans voting on the World Championship organizing committee‘s official Facebook page 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Slovakia.
During 12 days fans decided on the name for next year’s World Championship’s mascot. Overall, the vote has recieved a huge attention, reaching over 660,000 fans. In the first phase, they proposed a name for the mascot (reached almost 450,000 fans) and in the second phase, the fans voted for one of the two selected names (reach more than 210,000 people).
In the second round nearly 11,000 fans voted for one of the two selected names. The winning name is Macejko, which received 7,169 votes. The runner-up name was Juro, which got 3,577 votes. “We’re delighted that together we chose the best name for our beloved hockey bear,“ said the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Organizing Committee Chairman Igor Nemecek. “Best of all, the naming was decided by the most qualified people – the fans.“
The winning name for the official mascot of this important sporting event taking place in Slovakia next May was submitted by Matej Drinka from Borsky Svaty Mikulas. He can celebrate because he will receive a gift pack from the 2019 Organizing Committee courtesy of the IIHF.
“Although Macejko and Juro were the most popular suggestions, we got more than 1,200 other names submitted to us through a variety of social networks, including Facebook and Instagram,“ added the World Championship Organizing Committee Head of Communication Michaela Grendelova. “After the first round of voting, we narrowed that list down for a final vote. A big thank you belong to everyone involved.“
Macejko the Bear will appear in ice hockey arenas around the country over the next few months as the Slovak national team plays exhibition games leading up to the World Championship in Bratislava and Kosice next May.
“We have the look, name, and design, so now we can work on the final stage – the actual creation of the official mascot,” continued Head of Marketing Vladimir Jancek. “We intend to give Macejko his first public appearance before the start of the World Championship in places where games will not be played, so that fans not going to games, especially kids, can meet him. And of course, Macejko the Bear will be sold in the official championship fan shops so that fans can take him home with them!”
