Sam Hallam will succeed Johan Garpelov as head coach of the Swedish men’s national team as of the 2022/2023 season.
Hallam signed a four-year contract until 2026 and that will include the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship that Sweden will host on home ice in Stockholm together with Herning, Denmark.
Hallam played in the second tier of Swedish ice hockey before retiring at Bofors IK and starting his coaching career at a young age. After several years with the club he was hired by the Vaxjo Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League where he’s in his tenth season as head coach. During this time the 42-year-old has led the club to three Swedish championships in 2015, 2018 and 2021.
“To have the opportunity to lead Tre Kronor is a great honour,” Hallam said about his new job with the Swedish men’s national team. “The challenge feels incredibly inspiring, and if I look back at the coaches who had the role before, I also feel very proud. During my years in Vaxjo, I have had the opportunity to compete at the highest national level and after this season, it will be very fun to compete at an international level.”
Until then Hallam will have a shot at another championship with the Vaxjo Lakers that are also in competition for the Champions Hockey League title.
